Does Occupation Affect Views on AI? Frontline Workers Are More Concerned About AI Fueling Personal Data Crimes

Taiwan Social Change Survey

Since the release of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a widely accessible tool, but do people from different professional backgrounds share the same views on AI applications? Professor Fan Gang-Hua used data from Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS) Round 7, Year 5: “Technology and Risk Society” to explore the various ways the Taiwanese public interacts with artificial intelligence.

The study revealed that nearly 65% of the public believes AI development benefits society. However, attitudes toward AI differ across occupational categories. Professionals (78.8%), technicians and assistant professionals (76.8%), and clerical support staff (77.8%) recognize the advantages of AI but also express concerns about its negative social impacts, leading to a love-hate relationship. Skilled tradespeople (14.4%) are more worried about the potential for AI to be used in violent ways. Frontline workers (28.1%) and those who have never been employed (27.1%) tend to adopt a more laissez-faire attitude toward AI. However, frontline workers (12.5%) are also particularly concerned about AI contributing to personal data crimes.

The study also examined the influence of demographic factors such as gender and educational background, as well as experience variables, on attitudes toward AI development. It found that individuals with different attitudes on AI also hold varied opinions on who should be responsible for preventing and addressing the risks AI might bring.
