Asian Barometer Survey

Min-Hua Huang from the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University utilized data from the Asian Barometer Survey (ABS), spanning five points (2001, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018), to explore how party affiliation, generational differences, socioeconomic class, and social values shape public evaluations of government performance and trust in political institutions .

According to ABS data, since 2000, the proportion of Taiwanese citizens expressing distrust in the government has consistently hovered around 75%. This trend indicates widespread dissatisfaction with government leadership, regardless of which political party is in power.

Professor Huang further analyzed trust levels by age group, comparing younger generations (under 40) with older adults. The findings revealed that trust in political institutions is generally low across all age groups, but particularly so among the younger generation. This lack of trust reached a significant low in 2014, coinciding with the 318 Taiwan's Sunflower Movement, which underscores the close link between major political movements in Taiwan and youth participation.
