The Project to Add Value to Taiwan’s Empirical Databases: Prospects, Sustainability and Promotion (TESD) brings together major social science survey databases in Taiwan and promotes their preservation, value-added analysis, and academic use. By facilitating access to high-quality empirical data, the project aims to advance research on Taiwanese society, politics, communication, law, and everyday life.
To encourage university students and emerging researchers to engage with large-scale survey data and develop data-driven research skills, TESD is pleased to announce the 2027 Taiwan Empirical Research Data Paper Award.
This year’s competition includes both an Undergraduate Division and a Graduate Division. Eligible students are warmly invited to submit their research.
1. Eligibility
The first author must either be a citizen of the Republic of China (Taiwan) or be currently enrolled at a university or college in Taiwan. There are no restrictions on the status or number of co-authors.
1. Undergraduate Division: The first author must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a university or college. A recommendation from a university faculty member is required.
2. Graduate Division: The first author must be currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program at a university or college.

2. Eligible Databases
Submitted papers must conduct empirical analyses using survey data from at least one of the following databases:
> Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS)
> Taiwan Communication Survey (TCS)
> Taiwan’s Election and Democratization Study (TEDS)
> Asian Barometer Survey – Taiwan (ABS)
> Kids in Taiwan: National Longitudinal Study of Child Development and Care (KIT)
> Taiwan Law and Social Change Survey (TaDELS)
> Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD)
> Taiwan i-Generation Panel Study (TIGPS)
Papers that merely cite or discuss one of these databases in the literature review or background section without actually analyzing its survey data are not eligible.
3. Important Dates
Submission deadline: February 19, 2027, 11:59 p.m. (Taiwan Time)
Award announcement: Expected by the end of June 2027. Award recipients will also be notified by email.
Poster presentation: Award-winning papers will be presented at the Taiwan Empirical Research Data Integrated Academic Conference, scheduled for late July or August 2027. The exact date, time, and venue will be announced separately.
4. Awards
1. Undergraduate Division
One First Prize: NT$5,000 and a certificate of award
2. Graduate Division
One First Prize will be selected for each of the eight databases. Each recipient will receive NT$5,000 and a certificate of award.
The First Prize papers from the eight database categories will advance to a second round of evaluation. The top three papers will receive an additional NT$5,000, NT$3,000, and NT$2,000, respectively, along with certificates of award.
Awards may be withheld depending on the number and quality of submissions and the results of the review process.
5. Submission Guidelines
Papers may be written in Chinese or English and must be submitted as Microsoft Word files.
> Chinese manuscripts: maximum 15,000 Chinese characters
> English manuscripts: maximum 8,000 words
> Chinese abstract: maximum 500 Chinese characters
> English abstract: maximum 250 words
> Maximum of five keywords
> Citations and references must follow APA 7th edition guidelines.
The manuscript must be anonymized and must not contain the authors’ names, affiliations, advisors’ names, acknowledgments, or any other information that could reveal the authors’ identities.
Applicants must submit:
1. An anonymized full manuscript
2. A completed Submission Information Form for the appropriate division
